چکیده

Signatures of nitric acid particles (NAP) in cold thick ice clouds have been derived from satellite observations. Most NAP are detected in the Tropics (9 to 20% of clouds with T< 202.5 K). Higher occurrences were found in the rare mid-latitudes very cold clouds. NAP occurrence increases as cloud temperature decreases and NAP are more numerous in January than July. Comparisons of NAP and lightning distributions show that lightning is the main source of the NOx, which forms NAP in cold clouds. Qualitative comparisons of NAP with upper tropospheric humidity distributions suggest that NAP play a role in the dehydration of the upper troposphere when the tropopause is colder than 195K.

Supersaturation, dehydration, and denitrification in Arctic cirrus

A polar cirrus case study is discussed with the help of a one-dimensional model with explicit aerosol and ice microphysics. It is demonstrated that continuous cooling of air in regions with small amounts of ice and slow ice deposition rates of water vapor drives significant in-cloud supersaturations over ice, with potentially important consequences for heterogeneous halogen activation. Radiativ...

Timescale analysis of aerosol sensitivity during homogeneous freezing and implications for upper tropospheric water vapor budgets

[1] Using timescales for the generation and depletion of water vapor, we predict aerosol sensitivity in clouds formed by homogeneous freezing. Our timescale analysis explains why aerosol sensitivity increases dramatically with ice deposition coefficients (ai) 0.1, and also why aerosol sensitivity increases as vertical velocity increases, temperature decreases, aerosol number decreases, and aero...

An Intercomparison of Microphysical Retrieval Algorithms for Upper- Tropospheric Ice Clouds

U pper-tropospheric ice clouds are important modulators of the Earth’s climate, cover 20% of the globe at any given time (Liou 1986), and occur ~43% of the time in long-term satellite datasets (Wylie and Menzel 1999). Ice clouds, such as cirrus, tend to ref lect less incoming solar radiation and absorb more infrared radiation than water clouds, which are typically optically thicker and occur at...

Is aerosol formation in cirrus clouds possible?

The recent observation of ultrafine aerosol particles in cirrus clouds has raised the question whether aerosol formation within cirrus clouds is possible, and if so, what mechanisms are involved. We have developed an aerosol parcel model of neutral and charged H2SO4/H2O aerosol processes, including nucleation from the gas phase and loss onto cirrus ice particles. Laboratory thermodynamic data f...

Laser-induced plasma cloud interaction and ice multiplication under cirrus cloud conditions.

Potential impacts of lightning-induced plasma on cloud ice formation and precipitation have been a subject of debate for decades. Here, we report on the interaction of laser-generated plasma channels with water and ice clouds observed in a large cloud simulation chamber. Under the conditions of a typical storm cloud, in which ice and supercooled water coexist, no direct influence of the plasma ...
